Gormley could have stopped Poolbeg Incinerator in 2007 ... but didn't

My thanks to Baron von Biffo over on Politics.ie for this one. The good Baron is challenging Green lies and SPiN on this thread that John Gormley was powerless to stop the Poolbeg incinerator. Looks like Gormley wasn't so powerless after all. Gormley was appointed as Minister for the Environment in June 2007 and the contract (for the Poolbeg incinerator) wasn't signed till September 2007. He had three months to stop it going ahead but he did nothing. Source for this.

  1. The contract was signed by Dublin City Council, not the Dept of the Environment.

  2. I think you have missed the point here Eoin.

It is being claimed that Minister Gormley could not have stopped the building of the Poolbeg incinerator because contracts were already signed before he entered Govt. This is clearly not the case. Minister Gormley promised to stop the incinerator before he was elected in 2007 ... I heard him say this with my own ears. He was right back then. he could have stopped the incinerator.

He simply chose not to when he entered Govt in 2007. Remember Eoin, the contracts were not signed until SEPTEMBER 2007 ... 3 months AFTER Gormley came to power.

Signed by DCC against John Gormley's wishes.
