Turf Cutting on Protected Bogs

(My thanks to Politics.ie poster Adamirer for this one)

What is the Greens attitude to cutting on protected bogs? The 10 year cessation for turf cutting expired with the 2008 season... what did Gormley do? Did turf cutting cease on the SACs? No, it didn't. Have prosecutions commenced in earnest? No, they haven't. The current Governments attitude to such issues is just the same as the previous governments sadly.

Turf cutting was meant to stop back in 1997 with the introduction of the Habitats regulations. Theres been no legislation since, or need to, its already meant to be prohibited except Gormley keeps giving rollout extensions.

So be clear, the Gov hasn't made a firm announcement ordering compliance with 1997 rules yet, and without that (a good chunk of the bogs are in Brian Cowens constituency btw) we are still in the same position as before.

When a formal announcement gets made, when cases are taken (and won) against those who breach the rules - and there will be hundreds - I'll be the first to applaud him.
